According to the most recent statistics available from the Global Product Price Platform for March 2022, flour costs in Kuwait are the second highest in the Gulf behind Saudi Arabia, with one kilo costing $2.28, putting Kuwait seventh in the globe in terms of rising flour prices.

According to a local Arabic daily, Kuwait ranks fourth in the Gulf and 53rd worldwide in terms of rice production, with a kilo costing 1.3 dollars. Kuwait is also fourth in the Gulf area in terms of sugar pricing, with a kilo costing $1.44.

When it comes to meat prices, Kuwait is the second most expensive after Qatar, with a kilo costing $11 and ranking 41st out of 92 countries.

On the other hand, one kg of chicken costs $3.92 in Kuwait, which ranks fifth in the world behind Oman (penultimate) and 50th overall.

Although Kuwait and Qatar are the only Gulf countries without a value-added tax, the costs of basic food goods in Kuwait are regarded as high in comparison to other Gulf countries.

Kuwait had the highest food price inflation rate among Gulf Cooperation Council countries from January to September 2021, according to a report published this month by Moody's Investors Service. Kuwait, according to the service, is one of the countries at risk of rising food prices due to its substantial reliance on food imports.

Moody also drew attention to a report released on March 4 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on its latest food price index data, which showed a record jump in global food prices in February.
