Watch: The Philippines' Response To Kuwait's Visa Suspension
Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, The Crown Prince of Kuwait, recently engaged in a brief bilateral meeting with President of the Philippines Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit held in Malacañang, as confirmed by official sources. We are awaiting further details about the meeting.
Kuwait has long been a favorite destination for Filipino overseas workers, with over 250,000 Filipinos contributing significantly to the local workforce. However, in recent times, there have been distressing reports of the mistreatment and exploitation of Filipino laborers in Kuwait.
A drastic decision was made by Kuwait last May to suspend the issuance of new visas to Filipino citizens indefinitely. This move was a response to concerns raised between the Gulf nation and Manila regarding the protection of worker rights and the prerogatives of employers.
As a reciprocal measure, the Philippines halted the initial deployment of domestic workers to Kuwait in February. The decision was prompted by the tragic discovery of the lifeless body of domestic worker Jullebee Ranara in the Kuwaiti desert in January, which raised concerns about the welfare and safety of Filipino workers there.
