Philippines, Kuwait Clear Path To Recruit Domestic Workers
A Kuwaiti-Philippine agreement on a working mechanism for the resumption of domestic worker recruitment from the Philippines has been reached, according to Al-Anba daily quoting a source familiar with domestic labor matters.
The source confirmed that the agreement ends any suspension in the future, addresses previous problems, and activates the role of the shelter to ensure workers' rights. According to the source, the goal is to grant full protection to foreign workers without resorting to embassies.
Domestic labor affairs expert Bassam Al-Shammari praised the flow of negotiations and meetings between Kuwait and the Philippines. In addition to stressing the importance of convergence of views, he hoped the recruitment mechanisms for workers would be released soon so that previous problems would not recur, and for the agreement to be finalized so that workers could be recruited soon - before Ramadan.
According to him, this will enable labor recruitment offices and companies to meet domestic labor market demand. A majority of the citizens in Kuwait prefer skilled and trained Filipino workers. Stable labor supply means stable recruitment costs. It is our hope that the agreement with the Philippines will motivate other labor exporting countries to take the same step - especially Nepal, Ethiopia and Indonesia."
