Christmas Tragedy: Filipina Overseas Worker Killed On Return Home
Canice Minica Seming, a 29-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who had recently returned home for Christmas, was found dead in Antipolo City. Philippine media reported that the incident resulted from a conflict between the primary suspect, a carpenter named Art Tondo, and the suspect's ex-partner, who worked as a nanny for the family.
According to GMA News' "24 Oras," Seming suffered at least 15 stab wounds, and her lifeless body was found inside a relative's house in Antipolo City on Thursday (December 21, 2023) . Jose Garcia, the victim's brother-in-law, expressed deep sorrow, saying, "It was the worst Christmas ever.". It was supposed to be a fun Christmas."
Art Tondo, a former employee of the Garcia family's household, is at the center of this distressing criminal case. On that fateful night, CCTV footage captured Tondo's ominous presence roaming the subdivision, carrying a backpack, his hands ominously erasing traces of an unknown truth.
Garcia revealed that Tondo had been asked to take a leave due to previous money handling issues and attitude problems. Garcia questioned, "If it was theft, why was only Canice's phone stolen when her bag containing her wallet, cards, and even passport was nearby?" Despite this, theft does not seem to have been the motive.
Police investigations revealed that Tondo was trying to reconcile with the Garcias' domestic worker, Tondo's former partner, who wasn't present during the crime. Investigators suspect that Seming might have been an accidental victim of what is viewed as a "crime of passion."
It was also noted that Tondo had a previous criminal record. A “ping” from the victim’s mobile phone, allegedly stolen by the suspect, led to his arrest, as disclosed by Col. Mary Grace Riego Madayag, chief of Mandaluyong Police, to ABS-CBN’s digital TV Patrol.
Seming was the sister of Sey Garcia, the stepmother of renowned Filipina actress Coleen Garcia. Tondo’s apprehension took place in Barangay Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City, where authorities cornered him, recognizing him from the haunting image circulating in local news reports. According to a police officer, there seemed to be “no sense of remorse” when Tondo was arrested. Coleen Garcia has made a passionate appeal for Tondo's arrest.
