About 35 Indigo Aircraft Are Expected To Be Grounded In Q1-2024 Due To Engine Problems
According to IndiGo, the airline expects to ground a minimum of 35 aircraft during the January-March quarter of 2024 because of Pratt & Whitney engine problems.
The problem primarily stems from a powder metal problem, which affects the engines and adds to the airline's challenges.
"We have recently received additional information on the powder metal issue from Pratt & Whitney and based on our preliminary assessment of this, we anticipate Aircraft on Ground (AOG) in the mid-thirties in the fourth quarter (Jan-Mar2024) due to accelerated engine removals. In a statement, IndiGo said these groundings would be incremental.
Nearly 40 of IndiGo's aircraft have already been grounded due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues.
Due to the combined impact of these grounded planes, the airline is expected to experience significant capacity challenges in the crucial March quarter.
Regarding the powder metal issue, IndiGo recently received updated information from Pratt & Whitney.
According to their preliminary assessment, the airline anticipates several Aircraft-on-Ground (AOG) situations during the fourth quarter of 2024 (Jan-Mar 2024). These groundings are a direct consequence of accelerated engine removals, and they will add to the existing number of grounded aircraft.
"The powder metal issue, which Pratt & Whitney had already raised earlier this year, has caused these challenges. This problem has especially affected the new generation GTF (Geared Turbofan) aircraft engines," Indigo said.
In a roundtable discussion with the media on November 3, IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, highlighted the various measures the airline has taken to meet its fiscal year capacity guidance.
