Return Of Students Sets To Reveal Extent Of School Furniture ‘crisis’
With the extension of the closing date for the tender related to school furniture until the middle of this month, an educational source stressed the need to confront the crisis of opening about 15 new schools, which were scheduled to be commissioned at the beginning of the second semester, in a number of areas, reports Al-Rai daily. He said, “The supply through the current tender will not arrive before May or June, and the ministry’s warehouses are empty at the moment.”
The source went on to say, “The full return of students at the beginning of the second semester will reveal the extent of the crisis that did not emerge due to the rotation of students in the two group system at present. There is no solution except through direct purchase, but the problem is in the unavailability of budget. The Department of Supply and Stores has exhausted its furniture by preparing the schools of Jahra at the expense of the damaged ones in the operating schools. The Jahra schools requested furniture to deal with their student densities, but unfortunately there is not a single swivel chair in the stores. Many requests received from schools are still on the waiting list.”
The source added, “What was budgeted for the current tender, the closing date of which was October 15, is only KD one million. We have many obligations that fall within the furniture tender, including offices for school administrations, supervisory teams, chairs, tables for students, chairs for employees and playground areas for kindergarten.” He stressed the need to take quick measures to confront the crisis prior to the launch of full working hours for prospective students at the beginning of the second semester.
