Kuwait Reaches Initial Agreement To Hire Ethiopian Domestic Workers

17 July 2022 Kuwait

Ethiopian employment agencies recently visited Kuwait and signed employment contracts, easing the country's shortage of domestic workers, according to an expert.

Bassam Al Shamiri, who specializes in domestic labour affairs, said the step signals a breakthrough in reaching a Kuwaiti-Ethiopian memorandum of understanding on recruitment from Addis Ababa.

According to Al Jarida, the Ethiopian embassy is planning to open its new premises in Kuwait next month in order to ease a severe shortage of Ethiopian workers in Kuwait.

In Addis Ababa, several recruitment offices are awaiting the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between both sides to begin negotiating initial recruitment agreements, known as job orders.

As a result of Ethiopian workers' low wages and costs, Al Shamiri argued that there would be balance in the Kuwaiti labor market and the current shortage would disappear.

According to him, major barriers to recruitment of overseas workers include high air ticket prices and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Commerce's controversial decision capping domestic worker recruitment costs at KD890.
