The Kuwaiti Workers Accounts For Just 15.6% Of Labor Market
The Kuwaiti labor market witnessed notable growth in 2023, with approximately 129,000 new entrants, elevating the total workforce to around 2.919 million by the year's end. This marked a significant 4.6% increase from the previous year's count of 2.790 million workers.
Data from the Central Administration of Statistics revealed that the private sector remains the largest employer, accommodating over half of Kuwait's workforce, accounting for approximately 56.8%. Meanwhile, the family sector, including domestic workers, contributed 31.9%, and the government sector represented 16.3% of total employment.
The number of Kuwaiti workers increased to 454,000 individuals in December 2023, reflecting a 2.6% annual growth rate and constituting 15.6% of the labor market. Among them, Kuwaiti males numbered 191,200, while Kuwaiti females reached 262,800.
Non-Kuwaiti workers surged to 1.67 million individuals by December 2023, marking a 5.3% increase from the previous year. Males accounted for 1.4 million, while females totaled 187 thousand.
Both the government and private sectors experienced growth in employee numbers. The government sector saw a 2.4% increase, totaling about 476 thousand employees, with the majority (80.1%) being citizens. The private sector added around 84,500 employees, reaching a total of 1.65 million workers, representing a 5.3% increase.
In the family sector, the workforce expanded by approximately 33,000 workers, totaling around 786,231 individuals.
In terms of industry distribution, over 56.7% of national workers in the private sector are concentrated in accommodation and food services, financial and insurance activities, and construction. Meanwhile, over 60.6% of non-Kuwaiti workers in the private sector are engaged in food and accommodation services, construction, and manufacturing industries.
India leads the labor market in Kuwait with approximately 30.3% of the total workforce, followed by Egypt with 16.4%, and Kuwaitis with 15.6%. Other significant nationalities include Filipino, Bangladesh, Sri Lankan, Nepali, Pakistani, Syrian, and Jordanian workers.
