07 March 2021 Expats

About 300 expat engineers had their contracts renewed in the oil sector in the last period, most of them in the Kuwait National Petroleum Company in the interest of the oil sector, Alanba daily said, quoting responsible sources in the oil sector.

The sources stated that the reasons given by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries to the regulatory and legislative authorities when renewing the contracts of those expatriates are that these jobs require technical and rare skills, and professionals with their level of expertise is not available in the local market. In addition, the position is imperative to transfer their expertise via training and sharing to Kuwaiti workers in the oil sector.

According to data obtained by Alanba daily, the number of expatriate engineers who have had their contracts renewed in the oil companies are as follows:

Kuwait Oil Company:  22 engineers with a combined technical experience ranging from 25 to 38 years, most of them from India, with 16 engineers, and the rest from Egypt, Canada and Indonesia.

Kuwait National Petroleum Company: About 241 engineers, with a total level of experience of technical expertise of up to 35 years, and in the fields of project coordination, precision machinery maintenance, maintenance, manufacturing, services and operations. Most of these professionals are from India.

The Petrochemical Industry Company: 20 engineers, with practical experience of up to 36 years, in the specializations of chemical, electrical and civil engineering, and the vast majority of them are also from India with 15 engineers and the rest from Egypt and Jordan.

Kuwait Petroleum International: Only one manufacturing performance engineer with 35 years of experience in chemical engineering and of Indian nationality.

In addition, the sources said that the oil sector cannot ignore the expertise and skills required by these jobs and which are necessary for operating procedures for modern oil installations such as production and refining projects. This vital sector constitutes 90% of the country’s budget revenues, and it is necessary to seek the help of those with expertise and competence to work with it, regardless of their nationalities and despite the calls for Kuwaitization in this field, by replacing expats with Kuwaitis, or restricting jobs to citizens only.
