Kuwait Joins The Global Celebration Of World Press Freedom Day
Kuwait is set to join countries worldwide in commemorating World Press Freedom Day on Friday, aligning with the international community to champion the crucial role of journalism in the face of contemporary challenges, particularly the environmental crisis. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993, highlighting the pivotal role of a free press in fostering democracy, advancing human dignity, and driving comprehensive development.
Ahead of the celebration, editors-in-chief of leading Kuwaiti newspapers convened with the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) to affirm the nation’s commitment to press freedom and its exceptional leadership in the Gulf and Arab region. The Kuwaiti Constitution, established upon the nation’s independence, has long enshrined press freedom, facilitating vibrant and distinguished journalism that reflects the nation’s values and aspirations.
Walid Abdul Latif Al-Nisf, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Qabas newspaper, emphasized the enduring connection between press freedom and the public’s right to access information. He underscored the importance of upholding press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy, advocating for its protection against external threats and recognizing the sacrifices made by journalists, particularly those in conflict zones.
Al-Nisf praised Kuwait’s press landscape for its strength, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to objectivity. Despite challenges, Kuwait’s press has remained resilient and has played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse on local, national, and global issues.
Khaled Hilal Al-Mutairi, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Jarida newspaper, highlighted Kuwait’s longstanding tradition of freedom of expression, rooted in the nation’s constitution. He emphasized the need for responsible journalism that upholds national interests while respecting individual freedoms and dignity.
Yousef Khaled Al-Marzouq, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Anbaa newspaper, hailed Kuwait’s press as a vital pillar of democracy and social progress. He commended its role in raising awareness and fostering dialogue across diverse segments of society, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Walid Jassim Al-Jassem, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Rai newspaper, emphasized the global significance of press freedom and the imperative for governments to safeguard this fundamental right. He called on journalists to exercise their freedoms responsibly, adhering to professional standards and societal values.
As Kuwait prepares to mark World Press Freedom Day, the nation reaffirms its commitment to promoting a free and vibrant press, essential for upholding democratic principles and fostering national development.
