Uproar In Manila Over Filipino Worker Murder In Kuwait

29 January 2023 Filipinos

According to a statement released by the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received Philippine Cargé d'Affaires to Kuwait Jose A. Cabrera III Sunday afternoon. Cabrera was asked by Sheikh Salem to express his deepest condolences to the Ranara family and the Philippine government on the tragic and brutal death of Ms. Jullebee Ranara.

In a statement, the foreign minister condemned Ranara's murder and said that the perpetrator, who has been arrested, will be punished. Sheikh Salem added that the actions of the perpetrator do not in any way reflect the character and values of Kuwaiti society, the Kuwaiti people, and the Kuwaiti government. Cabrera expressed appreciation for the cooperation and assistance of Kuwaiti authorities, particularly for the swift action and response in the apprehension of the suspect and in the clearances for the shipment of Ms. Ranara’s remains. Sheikh Salem said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide the Philippine Embassy with all necessary assistance as it continues to monitor Ms. Ranara’s case.
Sheikh Salem was informed by Cabrera that Kuwait deployment is not banned based on statements by Migrant Workers Secretary Maria Susana V. Ople. Additionally, Sheikh Salem and Cabrera discussed bilateral relations between the Philippines and Kuwait and expressed a commitment to closer engagement and dialogue between the two countries.

A growing public outcry is urging Manila to ban sending workers to Kuwait as well as reconsider the bilateral agreement. Al-Rai daily reports that the Philippine government announced that it would coordinate with Kuwait in order to deal with the murder of Filipina domestic worker Jullebee Ranara, whose body was found in the Salmi desert. Labor Attache Nasser Mustafa came to Kuwait from the Philippines a few days ago to follow up the issue of workers crowded in the government shelter and the Embassy of the Philippines, as well as to investigate the murder.

Domestic workers would be more likely to escape from their employer's house when the slightest problem arises, as some are no longer confident they will be protected from assault because of this crime. The registration of several escape cases during the past few days for flimsy reasons leads to this assumption. Employees at the labor office said a domestic worker had called the police because her sponsor shouted at her. A second claimed her sponsor had hit her, but no evidence appeared in the medical report, including the claim that her sponsor had hit her.
