Thermal Cameras At Kuwait Border Idle For 5 Years
Investigations carried out by the Public Prosecution on surveillance cameras which are installed at the Kuwait-Iraq border, based on a report referred to it by the Ministry of Interior, show a number of these devices have been ‘idle’ since day one of their installation in 2014, reports Al-Jarida daily.
To add insult to injury the extensions to some of these thermal cameras have not been completed and some of them reportedly were operational just for a few days.
The sources say, it is surprising that no one in the Ministry of Interior has taken the initiative to repair these devices in spite of the fact that there is a clause in the contract which clearly states that the signatory company to the contract is duty bound to repair them as and when required.
This negligence has caused losses to the State Treasury believed to be more than one million dinars. The sources added, a team of public prosecutors recently spent about 18 hours at the border to inspect these cameras through private records.
The sources pointed out, these thermal cameras are designed to detect minute details about movement at the border, particularly infiltrators and smugglers in all weather conditions, but to the surprise of the inspectors these cameras have been idle for five years and the relevant department in the Ministry of Interior has done nothing to get them repaired.
The sources pointed out that the investigations show there was correspondence between the border security department and the finance department of the Interior Ministry on this issue but surprisingly none of the two sectors have taken the initiative to replace the faulty cameras or got them repaired as per one of the clauses in the contract
