26 April 2022 Kuwait

Around the corner is the happy holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which continues to haunt the Mubarakiya heritage area. Shoppers recall the days gone by when the market was crowded, but today the walls of the market darkened with smoke and fire tell a different tale, with the smell of burning still lingering.

According to the story, misfortune is to follow the owners of the shops that were destroyed by the fire as they continue to face hardships and adversities as the scenario paints a bleak picture of what their future holds. Reports a local Arabic daily, the question on the horizon is whether they will receive compensation and, if so, what will the compensation look like.

In Mubarakiya markets, visitors were still taking pictures to document the extent of the damage inflicted on parts of the market, even as the markets witnessed a great deal of activity before Eid.

Al-Mubarakiya markets were visited in anticipation of Eid to observe movement and activity, but this year seemed different from previous years.

As Khudari noted, the market fire has negative implications for all, as debts have accumulated, goods have been damaged and opportunities have been missed for the Eid festival, which occurs once a year, and normal life is returning after an absence of two long years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In order to compensate shop owners for their losses, he hoped that the power supply would be restored to shops that survived the fire. Several shop owners use lamps to get in touch with their customers, and it's surprising that power supply hasn't been restored.

"The loss is great. All the items in the shop have been reduced to ash," said Sajid Amjad of one of the burnt shops, and thinks of how the Mubarakiya market used to be bustling with customers during Ramadan and before Eid, especially the perfume market, which is the biggest perfume market in Kuwait, and how everything has been destroyed because of the fire." The shopkeeper stressed that “all shopowners and workers felt the pain of the fire that destroyed our dreams.
