Kuwait To Establish First Child Protection Center In Khaitan Area

02 March 2024 Kuwait

In a significant development, informed sources have disclosed that the Supreme Council for Family Affairs is moving forward with the establishment of Kuwait's inaugural child protection center. The council has selected a building in the Khaitan area, formerly utilized as a residence for juvenile boys under the Ministry of Social Affairs, for this vital initiative. This step comes in response to persistent appeals from various international organizations and is mandated by Article 77 of Law 21/2015 concerning children’s rights.

Article 77 mandates the creation of child protection centers across every governorate in Kuwait, under the auspices of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. The inaugural center is set to commence operations in Farwaniya Governorate, with plans for similar establishments in other governorates in the pipeline, according to reports from Al-Jarida daily.

These centers will specialize in receiving reports concerning situations where a child faces peril, as delineated in Article 76. Reports can be lodged by the child themselves, their caregivers, relatives, or professionals engaged with the child. The centers will implement all necessary measures to address the needs of children in jeopardy and extend support to their families.

Furthermore, endeavors will focus on rehabilitating family members responsible for causing harm to the child, equipping them with the skills needed for effective caregiving and successful reintegration into society.
