In Chess Tournaments, China Ends Russia's And America's Dominance

Chinese Ding Liren ended the United States and Russia's monopoly on international chess tournaments after decades of dominance.

Al-Rai daily reports that Liren won the World Chess Championship in Astana on Sunday after beating his Russian rival Ian Nepomniachtchi in the tiebreaker.

Having won 14 matches in the previous qualifying stages in the same tournament, Liren won the fourth match after three rounds of the match ended in a draw.

In August 2015, Liren became the second Chinese player after Wang Yue to enter the world's top ten players after winning the Chinese Chess Championship three times in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
