High-voltage Power Lines Do Not Harm Homes

08 March 2022 Information

Dr. Muhammad Al-Faris, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Oil, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, indicated that the Ministry of Health's (Radiation Protection Department) newest research confirms that persons living near overhead high-voltage lines are unaffected.

In response to a question from MP Hamad Al-Matar, Al-Faris stated that the Ministry of Electricity and Water does not have high-voltage power lines passing through homes and that the recommended safe distance between these lines and buildings is 20 to 45 meters, depending on the voltage of the power lines, which ranges from 132 to 400 kilovolts.

He further said that putting underground cables in some residential locations costs 20 to 25 times as much as the above lines, and the Radiation Protection Department hasn't looked into their safety.

He concluded by saying that work on high-voltage lines is carried out in collaboration with relevant government agencies such as the Kuwait Municipality, the Environment Public Authority, and the Ministry of Health and that he has received no complaints from residents living near the high-voltage overhead power lines.
