Filipino Workers May Return To Kuwait In Early 2024

It is anticipated that the Philippines will allow Filipinos to return to Kuwait in the first quarter of next year. A meeting between Kuwaiti and Filipino authorities is scheduled to take place early next month with the goal of lifting a ban that was imposed in May. Discussions will be held between the Philippine Ministry of Labor, private employment agencies, and the Kuwaiti side, focusing on reviewing the domestic workers agreement and outlining procedures for sending Filipino workers back to Kuwait.

An expert in the field of domestic workers, Bassam Al-Shammari, expressed optimism about this development. In an interview with Al Rai, he welcomed the expected return of Filipino workers, pointing out that it coincides with Ramadan, a time when domestic workers are in high demand. There have been several developments leading up to this development, including a visa suspension in May 2023, which followed the murder of Filipino domestic worker Jullebee Ranara in February 2023. Earlier this year, the Philippine government announced that it would assess and prevent abuses, especially "rape and ill-treatment of Filipina workers" in Kuwait.
