Expat Tried To Commit Barcode Fraud At Hawally Shopping Center

11 November 2023 Expats

A well-known shopping center in the Hawalli area has reported an expatriate to the Maidan Hawalli police station on charges of tampering with product barcodes. The market administration has provided video evidence showing the accused replacing the barcode of an inexpensive item with that of a more expensive one.

An expat residing in the country illegally, acting as the shopping center's legal representative, became suspicious of a product's price based on his experience. Upon informing the expatriate that the displayed price was incorrect, he feigned ignorance.

After the customer was asked to wait, the security team reviewed surveillance footage. Video clearly shows the expatriate affixing a barcode to a more expensive item after removing one from a cheaper item. His denial of involvement was debunked by the video evidence.

Upon receiving an alert from the Ministry of Interior, the expatriate was arrested at the police station and faces theft charges.
