Emergency Team Ready For Heavy Rain, Unstable Weather

21 November 2020 Information

With the time of rain approaching again, according to meteorological forecasts, the Ministry of Works preparations this year seem better than before, as it has completed many of the rain-related work.

A tour by the source in the southern region, which was the most affected area in the winter of 2018, revealed that the various government agencies, whether the Ministry of Works, the Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport or the Kuwait Oil Company, accomplished many works to protect the area full of hot spots according to the geological studies conducted by them. Country.

The beginning of preparations from the Al-Mangaf tunnel, which has been placed above since the winter of last year, several pumping machines to withdraw water from the tunnel as soon as it collects in it, and below it there is a spare pump that has not been prepared to work yet.

Towards the south, the Ministry, in cooperation with the Kuwait Oil Company, completed one of its most important proposed solutions to protect the areas of Sabahiya and Fahaheel, to prevent the floods from causing harm to the people by establishing a number of basins and industrial lakes near the South Sabahiya Park.

The industrial lakes area extends over several kilometers, and work began on it after the winter of 2018 and it did not end during the last winter, but yesterday’s tour revealed the completion of the works in it and its readiness to store huge amounts of rain that are drawn at a certain level through a pumping station located on the outskirts of The site to pump it to the sewer lines and from there to the sea.

Basins and lakes

Government agencies have established several basins and lakes at the site, separated by huge earthen mounds covered with asphalt and reinforced concrete with specific inclinations that allow water to gradually move from one basin to another once it reaches a certain level.

The importance of these mounds appears given that the area is located in the course of the torrent, and the old mounds were washed away two years ago, causing large areas to sink.

In addition to the lakes, the Ministry has set up earth barriers in some hotspots along the Fahaheel Expressway to protect the nearby residences that were previously submerged because they were located in the torrent.

Fears

The previous measures, despite their importance, are still not reassuring, according to a number of residents of the region, as the citizen Saad Al-Hajri confirmed to Al-Qabas, who was one of those who was swept away by the 2018 rains in his car for a long distance, that the preparations of the ministry and government agencies are still below ambition, describing them as primitive preparations that did not meet Yet to the level of the desired permanent solutions.

Al-Hajri does not rule out that the region will suffer similar damage to those that it witnessed two years ago if the rains came with the same quantities, indicating that unconventional solutions are required to protect lives and property.

5 solutions to face torrents:

1 – Pumping machines to draw water

2 – Collection basins

3 – Industrial lakes

4 – Dirt mounds in the squares

5 – Height tiered barriers

Teams are ready to handle developments

Informed sources in the Ministry of Works confirm that emergency teams are ready to deal with the developments of the situation on the ground up-to-date, and that strict instructions have been issued to contractors to equip teams belonging to them, especially in highway projects that are currently being implemented to prevent water accumulation in work areas or disrupt traffic in them. .

According to the sources, the Ministry focuses heavily on the tunnels spread on the various highways to check their readiness and the ability of the pumps in them to work with the required power during the rainy period.
