Domestic Workers' Minimum Wage To Be Aligned With Private Sector Employees
In a statement, the Public Authority for Manpower said it prepares a bill that would raise the minimum wage for domestic workers from the current minimum of 60 dinars to 75 dinars per month, stating that a discrepancy in salaries according to nationality harms the recruitment industry.
A local Arabic newspaper citing PAM sources pointed to the fact that under Law No. 68 of 2015, concerning domestic workers, and its executive regulations approved by Ministerial Resolution 2194/2016, "the minimum wage received by domestic workers and the like shall be no less than 60 dinars (200 dollars) per month.
The sources indicated that the authority is keen on protecting the rights of these workers, and it is seeking to raise the minimum wage so that it is equal to that of the private sector workers covered by Law 6/2010 and its modifications.
Specifically, the government should be responsible for fixing the problems relating to determining the salaries and wages of these workers based on their nationality, and making sure all female workers in Kuwait are treated equally, It indicated that the responsible government agencies would implement Article 19 of the aforementioned law in order to ensure that the domestic worker receives a salary that is not less than the minimum wage as specified in the work contract between the two parties, making sure that the worker receives his/her salary without interruption, and taking legal action if the employer delays the payment..
The sources also pointed out that the minimum wage is what is agreed between the two parties in the work contract (the worker and the employer), since the law of contractors applies to the contract, provided it is not in violation of the minimum wage mentioned above.
