Baba Convicted In Rape Case, 30 Killed,250 Injured,500 Detained In India
In what can be described as a maniac riot, 30 people were killed and over 250 were injured following Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted in a 15-year old rape case and taken into custody on Friday.
Soon after a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana convicted Ram Rahim guilty of rape and criminal intimidation. his agitated supporters set several government properties on fire. They also attacked media vehicles and journalists, in their bid to convey their anguish over the CBI court verdict, which came as a huge setback to their demigod.
;Elaborate security arrangements were made around the district court ahead of the court verdict. Army, police and paramilitary forces had been deployed in great numbers to control the anticipated riots. Despite all this, situation went out of control, resulting in 30 deaths and serious injuries to hundreds. Delhi was put on high alert in the wake of riots in Haryana following the court verdict.
Soon after the verdict, Rahim Singh, the self-styled godman was taken into custody. The argument on his sentencing will begin on Monday, and he is likely to face seven-year imprisonment in jail.
