Upcoming Whatsapp New Features: Chat Lock, Enhanced Text Editor, Expanded Disappearing Messages Durations, And More

03 April 2023 Technology

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is developing a new 'Chat Lock' feature for Android beta users, which will allow users to secure their chats and maintain privacy. The feature aims to lock users' most private chats within the chat's contact or group info, enhancing privacy, as reported by WABetaInfo.

When a chat is locked, it can only be accessed using the user's fingerprint or passcode, ensuring that it remains private. If someone tries to access the user's phone and fails to provide the required authentication, they will be prompted to clear the chat in order to open it. The Chat Lock feature also prevents photos and videos sent in a locked chat from being automatically saved to the device's gallery. The feature is currently under development and is expected to be available in a future update.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is rolling out a new text editor experience to some Android beta testers. The updated feature allows users to edit photos, videos, and GIFs in the text editor. Users can easily switch between different fonts, change text alignment, and modify the text background color. Several new fonts have also been introduced for beta testers, including Calistoga, Courier Prime, Damion, Exo 2, and Morning Breeze.

WhatsApp is also working on an "audio chats" feature, which will be available within conversations in a future update of the app on Android. Additionally, the platform is developing 15 new durations for disappearing messages, offering users more control over the messages they send and receive. The 1-hour duration is expected to be particularly useful for messages containing sensitive or confidential information.

The messaging platform is testing a feature that prevents multiple responses in polls on Windows beta. A new option within the poll creator allows users to force other people to select only one answer, resulting in more accurate polls. Some WhatsApp beta testers on Android and iOS have already received this functionality.

WhatsApp is also working to improve the readability of messages in community groups. A new full-width messaging interface for community announcement groups is being rolled out to some iOS beta testers, making it easier for users to read messages.
