The Nazaha Workshop Focuses On Detecting And Preventing Corruption

19 February 2024 Kuwait

The Kuwait Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) organized a workshop at its headquarters in collaboration with the World Justice Project (WJP), focusing on the insights from the 2023 Rule of Law Index report.

Counselor Nawaf Al-Mahmel, Deputy Chairman of the Commission, underscored the significance of partnering with the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to incorporate Kuwait into the rule of law index.

Al-Mahmel highlighted that this inclusion aims to bolster efforts in identifying and preventing corruption, evaluate new index factors previously unmeasured in the country, and raise awareness about international indicators to support regional and global reforms and policies.

The Rule of Law Index is a globally recognized tool for assessing adherence to the rule of law and gauging perceptions at the national level. In 2023, it evaluated 142 countries, with Kuwait ranking 52nd globally. The index evaluates diverse aspects such as government power limitations, corruption absence, open governance, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice, and criminal justice.

Emma Morley, the Resident Representative of UNDP in Kuwait, delved into the Rule of Law Index's role in fortifying the rule of law through opinion polls and studies reflecting people's experiences. She emphasized the workshop's significance in supporting measures aimed at enhancing the index's components, contributing to sustainable development, facilitating access to justice, and nurturing effective institutions within society.
