The Indian Government Says It Accidentally Fired A Missile Into Pakistan
India claimed on Friday that a missile that had landed in Pakistan two days earlier had been fired "accidentally" due to a technical error and that it was "very unfortunate." A day after Pakistan alleged a high-speed projectile launched from India breached its airspace and fell near Mian Channu in Khanewal district, the military ministry announced a 'Court of Enquiry' investigating the event.
Pakistan summoned the Charge d'Affaires at the Indian embassy in Islamabad on Thursday night to express its outrage over what it termed as an "unprovoked" violation of its airspace by a supersonic "projectile."
"A technical breakdown during routine maintenance on March 9 resulted in the accidental discharge of a missile."
"It has been learned that the missile fell in Pakistan." While the tragedy is very regretful, it is also a source of relief that no one was killed in the disaster," the statement read.
According to sources acquainted with the situation, the investigation team will look into all conceivable aspects of the occurrence.
The Director-General of Pakistan's Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, said on Thursday evening that an unarmed projectile fired from India entered Pakistani airspace and dropped near Mian Channu after traveling 124 kilometers.
"A high-speed flying object was picked up inside Indian territory by the Pakistan Air Force's Air Defense Operation Centre around 6.43 p.m.
"A high-speed flying object was picked up inside Indian territory by the Pakistan Air Force's Air Defence Operation Centre around 6.43 p.m. "From its initial route, the object abruptly changed direction and breached Pakistani airspace, eventually landing near Mian Channu around 6.50 p.m.," he claimed.
Iftikhar added, "It was a supersonic flying thing, most likely a missile, but it was unarmed."
Though Indian officials did not specify the missile's identity, the Pakistan military's statement suggested it could be a Brahmos missile. However, this has yet to be confirmed.
According to Iftikhar, the Pakistan Air Force observed the flying object's entire flight path from its place of origin near Sirsa, India, to its site of impact near Mian Channu.
