Soon, A Deadly Volcano Is Expected To Erupt

16 April 2023 Article

The world's deadliest volcano has been dormant since 1985, but seismic activity suggests it may awaken soon.

Last week, Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia recorded 6,000 earthquakes per day, prompting officials to raise the alert to the second-highest level and evacuate more than 2,500 families.

Colombian Geological Services (CGS) estimates that about 57,000 people live in the volcano's danger zone, which spans parts of six provinces.

More than 25,000 people were killed in the 1985 eruption of this volcano, and it is the fourth most dangerous volcanic eruption in human history.

Geological services in Colombia believe that last week's earthquakes were caused by magma moving through the fault system, setting the stage for the next deadly Nevado del Ruiz earthquake in Tolima and Caldas.

The volcano was formed about 150,000 years ago and is located 80 miles west of Bogota, the capital. Several layers of lava alternate with solidified volcanic ash to form this stratovolcano.
