Russia Started Military Operation In Ukraine

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "military action" in Ukraine and called on soldiers to lay down their guns, ignoring Western indignation and international calls not to go to war.

Putin made a sudden announcement on television about his plans.

He announced soon before 6:00 a.m. (0300 GMT) in Moscow, "I have made the decision of a military action," and pledged retaliation against anyone who interfered. He also demanded that the Ukrainian military lay down its weapons.

His statement came after the Kremlin announced rebel commanders in eastern Ukraine had requested military assistance from Moscow in their fight against Kyiv.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by making an emotive late-night appeal to Russians not to support a "major war in Europe."
