Kuwaiti newspapers report that an appeals court sentenced a psychiatrist to five years for smuggling drugs to prisoners.

In addition, Al Qabas said the man had been caught earlier illegally taking drugs into Kuwait's Central Prison.

According to the report, the specialist was supposed to treat drug addicts and counsel them about narcotics' harmful effects.

The defendant used to enter the prison to treat drug addicts among the inmates, according to investigations.

There was no word when the case surfaced.

However, a Kuwaiti criminal court sentenced a psychiatrist to seven years in prison in February after he was caught taking drugs inside the Central Prison.

In addition, the court ordered the defendant to pay a fine of KD6,000. He was, however, cleared of bribery charges due to lack of evidence.

It is unclear if the defendant is the same one convicted by the appeals court this week.

In June of last year, a military guard at Kuwait’s Central Prison had been apprehended on suspicion of smuggling drugs and mobile phones to inmates.

According to Al Anba newspaper, a security source said the suspect smuggled banned items to prisoners in exchange for large sums of money.

He used his job escorting sick inmates to and from hospitals to smuggle drugs and mobile phones and exploited his military position to personally bring in these prohibited items," the source said at the time. According to the source, some inmates caught with the stuff confessed to the guard's involvement, who stayed away from the workplace after learning of his misconduct.
