Ministry Of Commerce Tightens Noose On Recruitment Offices And Agents
Despite the scarcity of domestic workers and the proliferation of part-time workers who are in violation of labor laws and residence laws, the Ministry of Commerce has enacted measures to regulate labor recruitment offices after a steady flow of complaints claiming that these offices exploit the situation and raise the costs of labor recruitment.
In a local Arabic daily, ministry sources reiterated that there is a plan to put an end to this mess, and that on Monday inspectors from the Ministry's Commercial Control Department met with the owners of domestic labor offices in the Hawalli to conduct checks and to ensure labor recruitment prices are set and that ministerial regulations are followed.
Neither the owners of domestic labor offices nor the emergency team head Ahmed Al-Issa can charge more than the amount the ministry sets (890 dinars).
In the event that we receive complaints from consumers, we will deal with them immediately, seal the office and revoke the license if the office does not commit to the decisions of the Ministry.
"This is the first campaign of this kind. It was initiated in Hawally and will be implemented in all governorates in an effort to promote the commitment of the owners of these offices, as well as to address any instances of injustice or fraud that consumers may encounter," the official explained.
"At the beginning of the campaign, 40 domestic recruitment offices in Hawally were inspected, and some of them were closed."
Al-Issa said, "Any holder of a license for a domestic labor recruitment agency who rents it subconsciously will face legal action, as we noticed during the campaign that domestic labor is in short supply due to lack of demand, and, accordingly, we require offices to take on labor from permitted countries. Upon failure to provide employment or refraining from accommodating requests within 3 days, the office will be sanctioned.”
