Hosted by the Cultural Committee of the Department of Psychology and in collaboration with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the event aimed to highlight the crucial role of student counselors in addressing drug abuse among university students.
Moderated by A. Yousef Al-Houli from the Department of Psychology at the College of Social Sciences and Dr. Sami Al-Hamoud from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Endowments, along with the Director of the Community Guidance Office, Mr. Zaid AlMunaifi, the symposium was attended by the Acting Dean of the College of Social Sciences, Professor Dr. Ali Al-Zoubi, faculty members, and students.
Taking place on the university campus in Shuwaikh, the symposium emphasized the significance of student counselors in raising awareness among university students about the dangers of drug abuse. It focused on empowering students to take proactive measures to safeguard themselves from falling prey to substance abuse by addressing psychological and social factors contributing to such behavior.
Additionally, the symposium underscored the pivotal role of student advisors in building trust with students, providing them with a platform to voice their concerns, and allocating time for recreational activities. It stressed the importance of effective communication among counselors, families, mosques, and other pertinent stakeholders to support students in their journey toward a drug-free lifestyle.
Furthermore, the event emphasized the necessity of diversifying awareness-raising efforts to educate students about the adverse effects of drugs and smoking, as well as the underlying causes contributing to substance abuse.
