Kuwait Sees A Shortage Of Domestic Workers, Maids And Drivers Are A Necessity For Many Families

12 October 2020 Kuwait

For many Kuwaiti households, having a domestic helper is no longer a luxury but a necessity, like for those belonging to the ‘sandwich generation,’ individuals who find themselves attending not only to the needs of their children but also to those of their aging parents.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has thrown a wrench into the situation for some households, and the report says that Kuwaitis are having more difficulty finding domestic helpers.

An Arabic daily reported that employment agencies are reporting a lack of maids due to the decreased number of domestic workers coming from overseas as well as many of them have traveled abroad on vacation and have not been able to return due to the travel restrictions.

Maids: essential or luxury?

On an investigative quest to obtain the opinion of the citizen regarding the matte is that the maids have become integral to the smooth running of many Kuwaiti households. They pick up after the children, tend to them, accompany their elderly charges to the hospital and keep homes tidy, among their many roles.

People believe that the current problem is temporary which will be solved when life returns to full normalcy. Many are surprised by the fact that Kuwait has yet not opened doors to the recruitment of the domestic workers as compared to the rest of the gulf countries where precautionary measures are being followed at all stages.

Citizen considers Maids and drivers to be the cornerstone of the Kuwaiti society especially to take care of those with sick, aged parents. But for the rest, it’s not possible to do without them as wives and children are busy keeping the daily demands of life and making breakfast or keeping the house clean become a hectic task.
