Kuwait Ranks 50th Globally In The Food Security Index After Dropping 20 Places

In a recent update of the Food Security Index by the Economic Research Unit of the British “Economist” group, Kuwait experienced a significant decline, dropping 20 places compared to the 2022 classification. According to the latest report, Kuwait now ranks 50th globally out of 113 countries, marking a notable descent from its previous position.

The data, relayed by the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, indicates that Kuwait stands seventh in the Arab world and sixth in the Gulf region. This shift in ranking has sparked concerns about the nation’s food security status.

In the 2021 index, Kuwait held a more favorable position, ranking thirtieth globally with a score of 72.2 out of 100. However, in the 2022 index, Kuwait’s score has declined to 65.2 out of 100, reflecting a worrisome trend in food security indicators.

The Food Security Index, issued annually since 2012, evaluates countries based on four key factors: the ability to afford food costs, the accessibility of food, the variety and quality of available food, and the sustainability and adaptability of food systems.

The National Observatory for Sustainable Development and Future Foresight, a division of the General Secretariat for Planning, oversees the compilation of the index. The latest findings underscore the importance of addressing challenges in Kuwait’s food security landscape to ensure the well-being and stability of its population.
