Kuwait Dissolves Parliament, Elections To Be Held Soon

22 June 2022 Kuwait

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Sabah of Kuwait issued a decree today dissolving the National Assembly (Parliament) and calling for early elections.

In an effort to thwart reforms in the country, the government and the elected assembly came to an impasse.

"We will not interfere with the selection of the next elected parliament's speaker or with the election of representatives." Sheikh Meshal said.

He said decrees would be issued on those matters in a speech on live television.

The government submitted its resignation on May 10, and he issued an order requesting that it continue as a caretaker until the next elections.
