Court Upheld 10-year Jail Term For Manslaughter
The Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of the lower court, which sentenced a 20-year-old citizen to 10 years in prison with hard labor and four others to six months in prison, while another was fined KD150, for their involvement in an altercation and run-over incident which led to the death of a 22-year-old Gulf man.
The incident dates back to January of this year, when the Operations Unit received a report about a quarrel, stabbing and intentional run-over. When the security teams arrived, it was discovered that the victim had already succumbed to his injuries. When one of the accused was arrested, he admitted that there were previous disputes between him and the victim. He decided to meet the victim in a dirt yard, where a heated argument ensued between them and it developed into a fistfight. Then he stabbed him and ran over him unintentionally.
The defendant’s lawyer asked the court to change the description and record of the charge from premeditated murder to manslaughter. He argued that the incident was nothing more than an altercation and an exchange of blows, stressing that his client had no intention of taking the life of the victim.
