Engineer Alia Al-Farsi, heading the Environmental Affairs Committee in the Kuwait Municipal Council, has revealed ongoing discussions with eleven stakeholders on leveraging waste tires to address hazardous potholes in streets, as reported by Al Rai newspaper.
The initiative aims to enhance public safety swiftly and effectively. Moreover, the committee has scrutinized strategies to mitigate tire fires, emphasizing the role of the fire brigade in these efforts.
During the committee's inaugural workshop titled "Tire Dumps and Their Impact on Public Health and Environmental Safety," held on Wednesday, Al-Farsi highlighted concerns over the haphazard disposal of tires in the Al-Salmi area, where sporadic fires emit harmful fumes detrimental to health and the environment.
Highlighting global challenges in environmental preservation and pollution reduction, Al-Farsi referenced the International Basel Convention's guidelines for environmentally sound waste disposal methods.
Despite Kuwait's current practice of landfill dumping, Al-Farsi stressed the urgency posed by recurrent tire fires and their adverse environmental impacts, advocating for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.
Al-Farsi underscored the alignment of waste management investments with Kuwait's strategic goals of improving living standards and resource sustainability.
