Christians Celebrate Christmas Without Hugging Or Handshake
On Dec 25, expatriates of various nationalities, a majority of them Christians, thronged the Gulf Beach and the Fahd Al-Salem Street particularly the Sheraton Roundabout and adjoining areas in spite of the difficult times imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The mood was festive, but there were no hugs or handshakes, which are a common way of greeting each other. Everyone was committed to wearing the face mask and the movement was orderly.
Friends and relatives wait for this seasonal time every year to meet their relatives and friends in an atmosphere of fun but some of them seemed to temporarily forget social distancing. Almost every second person in the crowd seemed to pull out a mini sterilizer from his/her pocket after every handshake.
Almost everyone who the Al-Seyassah daily interviewed at random – a majority of whom were domestic workers – said this time of the year their sponsors allow them a day off (although not a full day off) to spend time with friends and pay a visit to the church, but many of them lamented the closure of the church by the Ministry of Interior to prevent the virus from spreading. One of the domestic workers said this year the Christmas was on Friday and she did not have to take special permission from her sponsor to go out, since it is her day off.
