Blood Moon Eclipse Around The World In Pics

28 July 2018 Automotive

The Blood Moon was visible around much of the world as the moon moved into the shadow of the earth for the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century.

The total eclipse lasted one hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds, though a partial eclipse preceded and followed.

And the Blood Moon coincided with one of the best views of Mars, as the red planet passed close to Earth.

Luckily, you didn’t need to splash out on an expensive telescope to enjoy it, as it was visible to the naked eye.

The next lunar eclipse of such a length is due in 2123.

How the Blood Moon could affect you depending on your star sign

According to astrology experts, eclipses can bring extra insights into people’s lives.

Last night's Blood Moon brought “clarity about knowing what your heart wants, especially when it comes to friendships”, explains professional astronomer Donna Page on Women’s Health.

She said that the Blood Moon made people re-evaluate the feelings people have about different friendships in their lives.

And if you’re a Leo or Aquarius, you’ll have felt the greatest impact of the Blood Moon, while Tauruses and Scorpios received some heightened insight, says Page.

The best time to see the Blood Moon

The Blood Moon was seen tonight.

It began at 8.49pm, and lasted until 10.13pm.

However, the the optimal time to get out and witness the Blood Moon was 9.21pm.

Does a Blood Moon mean the end of the world?

Despite what some conspiracy theorists have been saying, the world will not be ending on July 27.

The “Blood Moon” theory is interpreted from the Book of Joel, which says: “The sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.”

A similar passage in the Book of Revelations reads: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.”

But it has been routinely dismissed by astronomers and other experts as a myth.

What else did I see in last night’s sky?

Mars is the closest it has been to the Earth for 15 years – and is lined up so it appeared in the same part of the sky as the moon.

Mars rose about half an hour after the moon.

It was visible to the naked eye and shined more brightly than usual.

Why does the moon turn red?

When the sun, Earth and moon line up we get a total lunar eclipse.

The most impressive part is when the moon is fully in Earth’s shadow giving it a red look.

This is called a Blood Moon.

The red appears because the sunlight has deflected through the Earth’s atmosphere.

The colour can change depending on conditions.

As always, make sure you’re as far away from light pollution as possible.

Unlike with solar eclipses, it is safe to look at it directly.

Use binoculars or a telescope to get an even closer look.
