Al-sadu Weaving Inclusion In Unesco Victory For Kuwaiti Culture

18 December 2020 Information

The inclusion of Al-Sadu weaving in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Heritage is a victory for GCC countries’ culture, especially the State of Kuwait, said the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters on Thursday. In a statement to KUNA, NCCAL Secretary General Kamel Al-Abduljalil indicated that the inclusion – announced yesterday in a virtual meeting for the 15th meeting of UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage Committee – was a well-deserved win for Kuwait.

The achievement, supported by Saudi Arabia, came upon a great effort carried out by the Kuwaiti team, which included Kuwait’s representative to UNESCO Adam Al-Mulla, Kuwaiti member in Intangible Heritage Committee and NCCAL executive Sheikha Farah Al-Sabah as well as Al- Sadu House.

Al-Sadu weaving is the second cultural activity to make to the list behind date palm planting in 2019, he revealed, adding that there were other plans to include Arabic calligraphy and Diwaniyas (gathering halls) into the list. The 15th UNESCO Intangible Heritage meeting was held with the participation of 140 nations. (KUNA).
