An assessing authority is an organisation that checks applicants meet the standards they set. The standards include university or trade qualifications for applicant’s occupation. However, assessing authorities cannot offer migration advice or any updates regarding applicant’s visa application.

There are five major assessing authorities in Australia where most of the applicants can qualify to obtain positive skills assessment.

Engineers Australia: For all engineers and engineering managers except computer engineers
The Australian Computer Society (ACS): For computer professionals
VETASSESS: For general occupations
CPP – CPAA, IPA: For Account professional
TRA: For trade occupations
A positive valid assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a successful skills assessment for migration purposes.

Assessments are valid until whichever comes first:

3 years from their issue date unless a shorter period is listed on the assessment
the expiry date on the assessment

Step 1: Contact the Assessing Authority

The very initial step of getting your skill assessed is contact the assessing authority for your occupation. The list of eligible skilled occupations gives information about the relevant assessing authority for each occupation.

You must organize your skills assessment well before you apply for the visa. Each authority has its own assessment procedures, time frames and fees, therefore, the assessment of your qualifications and experience by the assessing authority might take some time.

Step 2: Provide Documents

Provide the assessing authority with all relevant documents, information and fee. The assessment fee varies from AUD 350-AUD 3000 depending upon the assessment authority.

Step 3: Assessment

Upon getting a positive skill assessment, provide a scanned certified copy of the suitable skills assessment with your visa application.
