Union ‘warns’ About Some Licensed Maids Hire Offices Sub-let To Asians
Kuwait Union of Domestic Labor Offices Chairman Khaled Al-Dakhnan has warned about some licensed domestic labor offices sub-contracted to Asians, revealing “these Asians usually incite domestic workers to flee from their sponsors and then work for others on hourly basis, which is more profitable for the worker and the office, but it is done illegally,” reports A-Rai daily. Al-Dakhnan made the statement to the daily at a time the previous problems regarding domestic workers seem to have resurfaced while the country continues to grapple with the domestic labor crisis caused by the corona pandemic.
Absconding
He pointed out “the first and last victim of the absconding domestic worker is the sponsor. Many domestic workers are escaping from their sponsors, yet the penalties – including imprisonment – for sheltering absconders have yet to be implemented. If only these penalties are strictly enforced, there would have been no absconding cases among the domestic workers.” He added “the sponsor suffers financially and morally. His rights are violated. It is possible that after a long wait which could reach five months, the domestic worker would escape after one week of working for the sponsor.
In case the absconding worker is arrested after two years or more, she is deported without imposing severe punishment on the person who sheltered her.” “Aside from the sub-contracted licensed domestic labor offices, unofficial and unlicensed offices also engage in the same activity that harms Kuwait’s reputation in the international community,” he disclosed. He then stressed the need to confront those engaged in activities outside the purview of the law.
