Unemployment Looms Over Kuwaiti Youths
The specter of unemployment looms over the future of Kuwait’s youth, who represent 70 percent of its population, based on figures that indicate a stifl ing employment crisis that the country will suffer from if it is not solved by creating jobs for the next generation of graduates, reports Al-Qabas daily. The Kuwait University has about 38,000 students and about 58,000 in the colleges and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training.
Add to this the students in foreign colleges and those who study at their own expense whose numbers range between 450,000 and 50,000. This means a total of 161,000 students, some of whom will graduate after two years and others after 4 years. Days ahead look more difficult because the number of graduates of the Kuwait University will increase annually by about one thousand, while the number of graduates in the 2014-2015 academic year was about 5,900, the graduates of the next academic year was 6,500, the number of graduates last year was 7,500.
Dr Abdul-Wahid Khalfan said that one of the most important plans necessary to get out of the expected unemployment crisis is to control the education outputs and to link them to the needs of the labor market in various disciplines and encourage the institutes and universities that respond faster to the requirements of the national and regional market to prepare technical workers and determine at the beginning of each year the needs of the market for a certain number of jobs, whether engineering, medical, mechanical or others.
