Shortage Of Expat Workers In Kuwait Drives Up Prices
MP Dawoud Marafi called on the government to support small and emerging projects, emphasizing the necessity of removing impediments hindering the enhancement of the business environment. According to Marafi, leaders within government agencies are contributing to the deterioration of the work environment by their individual actions against young entrepreneurs managing small projects.
In highlighting specific instances of concern, Marafi cited the licensing process for organizing tourist trips. Although the Ministry of Commerce had issued licenses to capable young individuals for organizing international trips abroad in an organized manner, the Director General of Civil Aviation urged the Ministry of Commerce to cease such activities on November 2. Marrafi criticized the lack of government action to address these actions that negatively impact the business environment and called on the relevant minister to find a rapid solution to the problem.
Marafi also raised the issue of destroying small, seasonal resorts built on land for recreational purposes during winter. The owner of these projects should be granted temporary licenses, with subsequent accountability for any violations of the law. According to Marafi, such challenges can be attributed to a systematic war orchestrated by influential merchants exerting pressure on government leaders.
Marafi's third concern is expatriate treatment, highlighting the disruption caused by deporting them without offering alternative solutions. He argued that this practice results in a disruption of the work environment and a subsequent increase in labor costs due to supply and demand imbalances. To maintain Kuwait's demographic structure, Marafi stressed the importance of attracting skilled workers with families.
In addition to the issues surrounding tenders, Marafi addressed how Gulf products can be supported as local products. He refuted the notion that Gulf agreements recognize Kuwaiti products as such, stating that Gulf countries do not support Kuwaiti products. Kuwaiti youth projects have been negatively affected because of the lack of implementation of laws favoring Kuwaiti products and ministerial decisions that equate Gulf products with Kuwaiti ones.
The government should respond directly to the challenges young entrepreneurs face in light of these obstacles, Marafi urged. In his remarks, he stressed the importance of both authorities prioritizing the creation of a conducive environment for the aspirations of Kuwaiti youth.
