Session To Discuss Bill On Sports Eyed
MP Al-Humaidi Al-Subai’e has proposed holding a special session to discuss the bill on professional sports. He pointed out that he heard the press statements of the chairman and members of the parliamentary Youth and Sports Committee, but they did not elaborate on the articles of the above mentioned bill.
He had earlier communicated with different sports associations and personalities, revealing that they expressed worries about the future of sports in Kuwait if the bill is ratified. He said the vague image presented by the committee and the information about privatizing sports entail that more time is needed to deliberate on the bill carefully in order to avoid negative consequences, such as putting sports under the control of a few individuals who will turn local sports into business whose main goal is to make profits.
He argued such a very important bill should not be discussed within a single session, along with other bills, during which a lawmaker is given only two to three minutes to talk. He added that local sports is dying, warning the draft law could put an end to Kuwaiti sports if approved without thorough discussion.
In another development, Al-Subai’e disclosed that his grilling motion against HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid consists of two items – first is failure to implement the recommendations of the parliamentary committee tasked to investigate violations in the oil sector in the capacity of the premier as chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council of Oil, and second is the government’s inability to fulfill its promise to protect the citizens.
Meanwhile, MP Sa’adoun Hammad criticized the increasing number of grilling motions now that the current parliamentary term is about to end. He thinks the objective of such motions is to make electoral gains, indicating that he expects the leadership to invoke Article 106 of the Constitution which states HH the Amir or Deputy Amir have the right to suspend the legislative sessions for one month.
If this happens, the month will end with the call for elections; while the other scenario is for the HH the Prime Minister to face the grilling, he asserted. Reiterating that these grilling motions are aimed at dissolving the National Assembly, wondering why some of his colleagues are keen on submitting grilling motions against a minister who just won the MPs’ confidence.
Moreover, MP Riyadh Al-Adasani obtained information that Minister of Finance Barrak Al-Shitan submitted his resignation to HH Prime Minister. The lawmaker added Al-Shitan does not deserve to remain in his position because he drafted the economic document whose objectives include reducing subsidies and increasing prices.
A Kuwaiti lawmaker on Thursday moved to summon the country’s interior minister for a parliamentary grilling just a day after he comfortably survived a vote of no confidence, National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said. Mohammad Hayefs intention to question interior chief Anas Al-Saleh, scheduled for parliaments session on Sept 1, mainly deals with allegations of “intruding into citizens private affairs,” the chief lawmaker said.
The MP is also accusing the minister of “covering up” crime targeting state security, he revealed, adding that His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah faces a Parliament grilling on the same day, as called for by lawmakers Abdulkarim Al-Kanderi and Al-Humaidi Al-Subaie.
Amid the Kuwaiti parliaments grilling galore, Education Minister Dr Saud Al-Harbi will also be called for questioning on Tuesdays session, as requested by a trio of lawmakers, he added. According to Kuwaiti constitutional law, lawmakers reserve the right to question ministers over matters “strictly related to their jurisdictions,” the top lawmaker highlighted. Any grilling procedure in Parliament can only take place “at least eight days” after the motion was brought forward, he added.
