16 March 2022 Saudi Arabia

Due to its importance for mental and physical health, yoga will soon be incorporated into Saudi Arabian schools' sports curricula, according to the president of the Saudi Yoga Committee, Nouf Al-Marwaai.

In November 2017, the Ministry of Commerce approved yoga for teaching and practice in the Kingdom. As a result of its multitude of health benefits, the president plans to introduce Yoga in the curriculum with the help of the Ministry of Education.

A lecture highlighting the cooperation between the Saudi School Sports Federation and the Saudi Yoga Committee took place this week, on March 9. Arab News reported that the meeting was attended by principals and physical education teachers from all levels of education, in order to mobilize the SYC strategy.

Additionally, the lecture discussed raising the participation level of Saudi youth in sports on a local and international level, as well as promoting their health.

The owner of Ananda Yoga Studio, Jama'an Al-Zahrani, told the news portal, "I have discovered many benefits during my deep dive into yoga, as it is an activity that allows practitioners to develop a calmer, clearer mind and a stronger body."

According to Al-Zahrani, Saudi schools have always emphasized the importance of contributing to the physical and academic development of students, and introducing yoga into the Saudi education system is a nourishing and effective initiative.

Saudi Yogacharya (certified yoga instructor), Al-Marwaai stated that the SYC has wide-ranging plans, and that the organization needs to broaden its scope and objectives so that yoga can be taught in schools on a large scale.
