Residents Begin To Panic As Kuwait Braces For Total Lockdown

07 May 2020 Lockdown

Kuwait cabinet will decide today on the recommendations of the Ministry of Health for a full lockdown to contain the increase in the spread of the coronavirus among citizens and residents in the country.

MoH has made a recommendation to impose a lockdown as the number of infected cases have been on the rise with no reduction in sight.

The great number of increase in contact cases (where people are giving it to others due to contact) has shown that the coronavirus is now spreading to all sections of society including Kuwaitis and the MoH is finding it difficult to keep up with the treatment.

Around 6289 infected cases have been reported as of May 6 with 2219 recoveries and more than 50 nationalities have been infected creating a widespread unease among the residents. While the number of infected Indians has crossed 2000, Kuwaitis, Egyptians, and Bangladeshis have also seen a spike in the number of infections since last week. 4028 patients are currently being treated in various hospitals around Kuwait and 88 are in ICU.

The number of deaths reported are also on the rise with around 42 deaths so far. The alarming increase in the cases despite lockdown in two major areas means that the control intended by the lockdown has not been successful.

While the health system is being stretched, there is great panic and economic hardship among large sections of the population and people are unable to see any relief in sight.

Kuwait has also increased random testing in several areas and several cases have been discovered. Health protocols are not very strictly imposed and areas with the dense populations still are not following these protocols.

A total lockdown is now seen as the last option to contain the spread and flatten the curve but the economic hardships are also becoming unbearable for an increasing number of people.
