According to local media, Kuwait's top court has ruled that a residential area is unfit to live in because of pollution caused by factories.

Using a report compiled by an expert panel, the court found pollution levels in Umm Al Hayman in the Al Ahmadi governorate in east Kuwait to be high.

Umm Al Hayman, also referred to as the Ali Sabah Al Salem suburb, filed a lawsuit in response to the final ruling.

According to Kuwaiti media, the verdict will benefit the suburb's estimated 56,000 residents.

In light of the ruling, how will the government react?” asked Al Rai newspaper. Are the Umm Al Hayman residents going to receive compensation and will alternative housing be provided for them?" Alternatively, will the industrial zone be relocated?”

There are likely to be compensation requests from residents who have suffered diseases caused by pollution, according to the same paper.
