Protesters Rally For Women's Rights And Freedoms
KUWAIT: Yesterday, more than 150 people gathered at Irada Square in front of the National Assembly to protest violations of women's rights and freedoms. "Kuwait is a civil country regulated by the constitution," "Personal freedom is guaranteed by article 30 of the constitution," and "No future for a nation without equity" was among the messages on banners held by participants in English and Arabic.
The participants gathered to preserve liberties in general and women's freedoms in particular, according to Ibtihal Al-Khateeb, a political activist and lecturer at Kuwait University. "These range from basic topics like women participating in sports to more severe concerns like entering the army. "We need to send a message that all freedoms are essential human rights and that if we give up tiny liberties, our larger rights will be abandoned," she warned.
The demonstration was also attended by men. People are joining to oppose attacks on public and private liberties, according to Mishaan Al-Barrak, a member of the Kuwait Progressive Movement. "We've recently witnessed an increase in abuses of women's rights. We came to represent and advocate for underprivileged women like Bedoons, domestic workers, and those who are unable to speak for themselves. They are victims of persecution and brutality, and we want to help them express themselves," he told Kuwait Times.
The demonstration arose after an "immoral" women's yoga retreat was postponed over the weekend after officials indicated it lacked a permit.
Kuwaiti women have been pushing the boundaries of their society, which is regarded as one of the most liberal in the region since they gained the right to vote in 2005. For the first time last year, they bucked orthodox traditions and a culture of "shame" to come out against harassment.
