National Assembly Amends Public Tenders Law, Removing Local Agents Requirement

12 December 2023 Kuwait

A number of amendments to the Kuwait National Assembly's commerce laws regarding public tenders and the removal of the local franchisee requirement were approved in the first and second deliberations held on Tuesday during the regular session.

A total of 57 members of parliament voted in favor of the amendment, while only one voted against it.

In addition to eliminating the requirement of a local agent, the modification aims to create equal opportunities, stimulate competition, and improve products and services on the market while also managing prices.

According to several parliamentarians, removing the requirement for a local agent would promote real competition among investors, allowing foreign companies to open branches in Kuwait. As a result of the proposed changes, local agents would be eliminated, making it possible for prices and quality to be more competitive.
