Ministry Of Interior Accepts Poll Applications
The Elections Department at the Ministry of Interior on Monday will start receiving applications to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections and this will continue until Nov 4 in accordance with Decree No. 150/2020. Elections Law No. 35/1962 stipulates the conditions for candidates in the parliamentary elections as follows: must be a Kuwaiti by origin, registered in the roster of voters, at least 30 years old on the day of voting, can read and write, and has not been subjected to a court verdict for committing a crime that affects his honesty and dignity unless he obtained a rehabilitation verdict.
Any citizen convicted of offending the Divine Entity, Prophets (Peace Be Upon Them) or Amiri Entity has no right to stand for elections. A candidate must personally fill up the application form at Khawla School for Girls in Shuwaikh. He must pay KD 50 as per Article 21 of the Elections Law. He has the right to withdraw his application and abandon nomination within seven days before the date of voting. He must apply to stand for elections in one constituency only. If he is working in the public sector, he must stop working from the first day of ending the filing of candidacies until the end of elections.
Ministers, judges, public prosecutors and members of the Investigations General Department who intend to stand for elections must resign before filing their candidacy. Chairpersons and members of elections committees, as well as their first degree relatives, are not allowed to stand for elections in the constituencies under their committees unless they give up their positions. Military officials, Kuwait Army and police officers who want to stand for elections must submit documents proving their termination from service.
