Kuwait's Clean Energy Journey: Progress And Challenges

23 March 2024 Kuwait

Kuwait's transition towards clean energy faces hurdles despite its ambitious 20-year renewable energy strategy, as highlighted in a report by "Arabian Gulf Business Insight."

With approximately 7% of global oil reserves, Kuwait is among the highest emitters of greenhouse gases in the Gulf region. However, it aims to bolster its renewable energy capacity to 22 gigawatts by 2030, striving to offset its heavy reliance on oil production, which exceeds three million barrels per day.

Experts predict that renewable energy will constitute less than 10% of Kuwait's total electricity production by 2030, reflecting the nation's lag in implementing renewable energy projects. Key challenges include the delayed progress of major projects like the Al Shaqaya renewable energy initiative, despite Kuwait's abundant solar and wind energy potential.

Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy Company, emphasized the potential benefits of renewable energy, including reduced air pollution and cost savings, especially considering Kuwait's reliance on imported fuel oil and liquefied natural gas.

However, governance issues and historical dependence on oil revenues have hindered Kuwait's renewable energy advancement, according to Tadhg O’Donovan, chief energy scientist at Heriot-Watt University Dubai.

While the Middle East anticipates significant growth in solar energy capacity, with countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt leading the charge, Kuwait has yet to emerge among the top regional leaders in renewable energy projects. Data from Statista underscores the substantial investments in renewable energy projects by neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Morocco.

Despite challenges, Kuwait has the financial resources and potential to catch up with its Gulf counterparts in renewable energy development. Overcoming governance hurdles and enhancing project implementation are critical steps towards achieving its clean energy goals.
