Kuwaiti Conscience Voices Red-faced Chamber Shame
Dr Ahmed Al-Khatib, who is looked upon as national symbol said that “the discovery of torture chambers at the State Security headquarters is a disgrace to Kuwait,” and called for “the formation of a serious parliamentary investigation committee with broad powers to uproot this calamity,” reports Al-Qabas daily. Dr Al-Khatib said in a statement on his official Twitter account, “I was appalled by the news of the discovery of torture chambers at the State Security headquarters, and the various methods of torture,” which puts the country’s reputation, its political history, the Constitution, and the reputation of every Kuwaiti at stake, “which I do not accept at all.”
Dr Al-Khatib asked, “Has Kuwait become one of those countries that pursue torture and mastery in its methods? I wonder, who came up with and when with this policy of torture and who is responsible for implementing it? Who was aware of it and accepted it? And do not say that it is nothing but just a ‘method’ of state security! If crude rudeness is persisted by the official state security headquarters under the nose of officials for years, it makes it naïve to believe that the government has no knowledge or anything to do with it.”
Dr. Al-Khatib made his statement by saying, “A matter of this seriousness requires immediate serious treatment, and of course this does not mean that the security authority itself should be treated. Rather, it is assumed that a serious parliamentary investigation committee with broad powers will be formed to uproot this calamity, in addition to the role of the Public Prosecution, which we value in following up this issue, also, human rights institutions must pay attention to this dangerous issue, play their role, and put pressure on parliamentarians to do their duty seriously to confront this calamity.”
